Final Fantasy XIII-2 – Finally

After being behind the curve on getting a chance to play this game,I finally found time this week to take a crack at it.

First off let me say that right off the bat this game surpassed my expectations. I am roughly half way through the game but I have found less to complain about than I thought.

My biggest complaint is still the battle system. I was not impressed with it in XIII and I still am not impressed with it in XIII-2. I have stated this many times, as everyone who reads my blog knows, FF needs to go back to the turn based battle system and eliminated the retry. If yoy you strategy and a little common sense, why would you need to retry? The retry makes for lazy battles and takes the fun out of it.

Another complaint I have, up to where I am, is the lack of playable characters. Yes you have all the monsters to choose from but it’s not the same as using a person. The monsters play no part in the story line so it feels like they got lazy and didnt want to develop back story for characters.

The only other complaint I have is the quiz system. It sucks! Enough said.

Now for the things I like that have stood out in the game. I will more or less just list them as I hope to come back later and go into much more depth. For starters I like how I have the ability to roam around again. I hated the linear feel of XIII. I love that the chocobo races are back. I love how beautiful they have incorporated the original characters into the story. This was one of the biggest surprises to me. And to finish off my likes as of where I am is Mog.

As always I look forward to your comments and hope to see you at the forums!

Final Fantasy Wallpapers – FF

Over the next several day I will be posting some Final Fantasy wallpapers for your enjoyment. I will be breaking it down into sections of each game and then various other FF game related things. As of now, I have no plans to add very many specific character wallpapers, but that may change as I make each post.

I take no credit for any of the wallpapers but they are some of my favorites so I wanted to share with everyone. We shall start with the original Final Fantasy. Enjoy!

Final Fantasy Communities

Over the years I have been involved with many Final Fantasy Communities, from websites and forums to walkthroughs and conventions. Many of those communities are no longer with us, whether it be from disinterest in Final Fantasy or gaming in general or because the members of those communities have grown and now have lives that keep them busy.

Within these communities I have acquired many friends over the years, many of whom I still converse when the time permits. I believe these communities are a great way to find people who share our interest and common ground to talk about. I recommend that everyone join one or another, even if it is something for the rare occasion.

That being said, I would like to invite you to a wonderful Final Fantasy Community. A place you can go and share your thoughts a few minutes a week.

Final Fantasy Exodus

FFExodus is a final fantasy community that has been around for a while, but is just now coming back to life. As many of the older gaming generation can attest to, sometimes life takes over and your priorities change. That happened to FFExodus. As the members grew older their lives took them away from the online world. Marriage, children and jobs all took over.

Now, marriages are secure, children are growing, some of the original members have found that they have time on their hands. A new hobby, that was once a life. They are attempting to rebuild their community and are looking for people who are interested. They are not looking for someone to be one 24/7, they are looking for people like themselves. Someone who loves Final Fantasy and gaming in general, who likes to spend a little time each week talking and making friends. Whether the talk be about Final Fantasy, another game or just life in general.

Please stop by and have a look. It cost nothing but a few minutes of your time to stop and have a look and who knows you could find yourself making new friends. If you like what you see, email
say so. Currently FFExodus is open to viewing to everyone, but new members need to be approved. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you there as we start this wonderful new year πŸ™‚

Final Fantasy Quotes

I am sure that I am not the only one who walks around quoting games on an everyday basis. It is a habit I got into long ago and have never really seemed to be able to stop. Because of this, I want to encourage others to walk around and just spout off random quotes from Final Fantasy games for no other reason than they can. Here are some of my favorite quotes from various Final Fantasy games that I use or I have heard used in conversation.

Old-school Chocobo: Wark!
New-school Chocobo: Kweh!
Any Moogle: Kupo!
Any Tonberry: Doink!

“You impertinent fools. I, Garland, will knock you all down!!”

Woman in Ur (FFIII): Hey, where are you four brats off to now? What…? You’re going to go save the world…? Did you get hit on the head or something!?

Galuf: Whose idea was it to steal that pirate ship, anyway?
Bartz: Yours, you old coot!
Galuf: … Oh, my head! I can’t seem to remember anything!
Bartz: And his amnesia oh-so-conveniently returns.

Cid: That lobster just got served!
Bartz: With cheese biscuits and mashed potatoes!

Bartz: But it’s fun! poke, poke, poke…

Edgar : “That’s Shadow! He’d slit his mama’s throat for a nickel!”

Edgar : “If something were to happen to me, all the world’s women would grieve!”

CID, ABOUT CLOUD – “Just when you thought he was smart, he’d go off and do some damned fool thing.”

Listen up! Teamwork means staying out of my way! (Seifer)

Seifer: Great, I have one chicken-wuss and one kid who just entered puberty in my team!

Laguna: I feel a draft on my butt…

talking about Cinna’s face…]
Garnet: Oh, really? I am sorry. You startled me.
Zidane: Well, with a face like his, I’d be pretty shocked, too!
Cinna: Man, that hurts! I wash up every morning, you know!

“He called me a liar and a loudmouth and a brat!!!” (Eiko)
“…He’s right.” (Amarant)
“What did you just say? D’you wanna repeat that?!” (Eiko)
“Man, I hate kids…” (Amarant)

Bastards, we may be, but clever are we.
Zorn, Final Fantasy IX

“You can cram your happy festival, you big meanie!” Rikku

Vaan: So, this Jules…is he an old friend of yours, Balthier? You two seemed…close.
Balthier: Close enough for fisticuffs…Driver! Faster, if you please. I would be loath to expend any of the violence of my present mood on my companions.
Cabby: S-Sir? Yes, sir!

Ba’gamnan: The whole affair has the smell of money. I may have to wet my beak a little.

Best Final Fantasy Character (Part II)

As stated in the previous post, I had too much trouble trying to pick an overall best character for FF so I broke it up into two parts. Supporting characters and main characters. I was unable to decide who the best supporting character was but I had no difficulty determining who the best main character was.

Without further adieu, the winner is….

Black Mage
black mage1
Black Mage (γγ‚γΎγ˜γ‚…γ€γ—, Kuromajutsushi?) is the offensive magic caster of the Light Warriors. While the Black Mage has weak combat skills and the lowest HP out of any character class, he is capable of inflicting negative status effects and causing great damage to the enemy with his Black Magic. They have the appearance of a human dressed in a blue cloak, with only eyes glowing in the dark of his face

Choosing Black Mage as the all time best Final Fantasy character was easy for me. Here are some of the things that Black Mage has appeared in other than FF:

Trading/Playing Cards
BM card

BM Poster

BM Comics

With such versitility who doesn’t love BM!

Best Final Fantasy Character (Part I)

I had a very difficult time trying to determine who I believed to be the best Final Fantasy character. I finally decided it would be best to break it up into two parts – main character and supporting character. This post will cover the Best Final Fantasy Supporting Character and Part II will cover the Best Final Fantasy Main Character.

Even in trying to decide who the best supporting character was I still am having trouble narrowing it down from two. There are two that stand out in my mind and I have decided that for now I will call it a tie! But who are thy you may ask? Here are the results

The nominees are
Mog and Boco!

When it comes to supporting characters of Final Fantasy both Mog and Boco stand out above all others.

Boco, or Boko (γƒœγ‚³, Boko?) is a recurring chocobo name in the Final Fantasy series. Boco often plays an important role as one of the main characters’ chocobo, or otherwise as a notable chocobo in the game.

Moogles (γƒ’γƒΌγ‚°γƒͺ, Mōguri?) are a recurring race in the Final Fantasy series. The name moogle (or Moguri in Japanese, Spanish and Italian and Mogry in German) is a portmanteau of the Japanese words for mole (mogura) and bat (komori). They first appeared in Final Fantasy III and have appeared in some capacity in every main series game since, with the exception of Final Fantasy IV.

The importance of moogles to the plot varies from game to game, ranging from playable characters to simple cameos. Several, such as Mog, Stiltzkin, Artemicion and Montblanc, have made repeated appearances. Although their appearance has changed throughout games, they can easily be recognized by the small wings, usually pink or white fur and a pom-pom hanging from their heads. Moogles are generally mild tempered and like to eat vines and fictional Kupo Nuts.

With the roles that both play in the Final Fantasy series it is too hard to determine the winner between the two. Don’t you agree???

Faster Final Fantasy Turnaround?

Speaking with GameReactor, Final Fantasy series producer Yoshinori Kitase noted that he wanted the Final Fantasy series to have more rapid iterations, following the successful business model set by Western triple-A titles such as Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty.

“Final Fantasy XIII was the first game [we made for current generation consoles], and personally I think we took a little too long getting it out,” said Kitase. “When you think of Western triple-A titles like Call of Duty, Battlefield and Assassin’s Creed, they seem to work with a lot shorter turnaround (for more, see link) and

Now for some thoughts

Yoshinori Kitase gave this interview to GameReactor. After reading it, I am left to wander if we are going to lose even more of our ‘Final Fantasy’ as they attempt to release games quicker. If producing a game quicker means that it begins to suck more and more with each passing game, what is the point? It seems with each new game the Final Fantasy series is becoming less of an RPG and more of a crapfest.

I am all for taking more time to create a more quality game. I believe that true fans of FF would agree.
